Cece Yara and Cummins West Africa Partner to Equip Over 600 Teachers with Essential Child Protection Training

In a significant initiative to tackle child abuse in Nigerian schools, the Cece Yara Child Advocacy Centre, in partnership with Cummins West Africa Ltd, has trained over 600 teachers across Lagos and Abuja in child protection. The training sessions, held on 27th August, 10th September, and 24th September, provided comprehensive, practical guidance on recognising, preventing, and addressing abuse, reaching educators from Lagos State Teaching Service Commission Districts 5 and 1, as well as 11 schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This collaboration reaffirms Cece Yara’s commitment to empowering educators as crucial guardians of children’s safety and wellbeing.

Chief Executive Officer of Cece Yara, Mrs Bisi Ajayi-Kayode, highlighted the mission behind the training: “Our programme today is grounded in rigorous research and proven methods, designed to establish best practices in preventing and responding to child abuse. Globally and here in Nigeria, we recognise the role of adults in protecting and saving children. Many young victims cannot recognise or report abuse, especially when the perpetrator is a family member—who, in 90% of cases, is someone known to the child. Teachers are often the ones children confide in, so it’s vital they are prepared to respond appropriately.”

The training comprehensively addressed essential aspects of child protection, including recognising types of child sexual abuse—both physical and digital—and minimising risk through preventive strategies. Teachers were equipped to detect signs of abuse, approach cases sensitively, and take prompt, appropriate action to protect students. Mrs Ajayi Kayode emphasised, “No child should be left behind, whether physically or digitally. We are here to demystify child sexual abuse and open up vital conversations around sex education.”

Participants praised the depth and practical application of the training. Mrs Ajibare Titilope, a teacher from Lagos, noted the importance of creating a supportive environment in schools: “This training equips us to support our students. Teachers need to be approachable so students feel safe coming to us with their concerns. It’s our responsibility to create that safe space.”

Comrade Ojedokun Ahmed Bolaji, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Agege Branch, Lagos, commended the programme, calling it “a step in the right direction.” He stressed that such training is crucial in today’s educational landscape, where children’s safety and trust are paramount.

This partnership with Cummins West Africa marks a pivotal moment in Cece Yara’s mission to protect children from abuse by empowering those closest to them daily. By equipping teachers with the knowledge to recognise and address child abuse, Cece Yara and Cummins West Africa are fostering safer educational environments and building a future where every child is safe, supported, and empowered.
