This article discusses child sexual exploitation, which may be sensitive or triggering for some readers.

A Growing Concern

Child exploitation both globally and in Nigeria has become a disturbing epidemic affecting thousands of children, families, and communities. It strips children of their innocence, dignity, and in many cases, their future.

According to UNICEF, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 10 boys will experience sexual violence before turning 18. These numbers aren’t just statistics, they are real children, with real lives, dreams, and stories that have been forever changed.

At Cece Yara, we believe that silence protects abusers, but action protects children. Breaking the cycle begins with awareness, education, and a community committed to speaking up.

What Is Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)?

The All Wales Child Protection Procedures Review Group (2013) defines child sexual exploitation as:

In simpler terms, CSE happens when someone usually older takes advantage of a child for sexual purposes, using deception, threats, or bribery. It is a form of abuse, never consent.

In Nigeria, child sexual exploitation appears in several forms:
● Early and Forced Marriages: Nigeria has the highest number of child brides in Africa over 23 million girls were married as children, mostly from poor or rural families.
● Trafficking Networks: Nigeria remains both a source and destination for child trafficking, exposing children to forced labour and sexual exploitation.
● Online Grooming: With increased internet access, predators manipulate children through chats, games, or social media gaining their trust before abuse.

Remember: a child under 18 cannot legally consent.

Root Causes of Child Sexual Exploitation in Nigeria

To protect children, we must understand what fuels their exploitation:

● Poverty: Desperate families may unknowingly expose children to danger through false job or marriage promises.
● Gender Inequality: Cultural norms often normalize child marriage or treat girls as property.
● Weak Law Enforcement: Despite strong child protection laws, poor implementation allows abuse to go unpunished.
● Conflict & Instability: Displacement leaves children vulnerable to traffickers and abusers.
● Cultural Silence: Talking about sexual abuse is still taboo, preventing victims from speaking up or seeking justice.

Recognizing the Signs of Child Sexual Exploitation

Spotting abuse early can save a child’s life.

Watch out for these possible indicators:

● Sudden mood swings or aggression
● Signs of physical injury or unexplained bruises
● Fear of certain people or places
● Secretive behavior or unexplained money and gifts
● Poor mental health, depression, or anxiety
● Early pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections
● Periods of disappearance or sleeping away from home

If you notice any of these signs, don’t ignore them. Speak up, report and seek help immediately.

What to Do if a Child Confides in You

When a child reveals abuse, your response matters more than you may realize.

Here’s how you can help:

● Listen calmly and carefully.
● Reassure them: They did the right thing by speaking up.
● Don’t confront the abuser.
● Let them know it’s not their fault.
● Seek immediate professional help.
● Assure them they are safe now.

Children depend on adults for protection. Many do not even realize they are being exploited because manipulation often comes disguised as love, friendship, or care. It’s up to us the adults to notice, protect, and act.
